Harkirat Singh aged 20 years has a craze for fancy mobile phones and wants to lead a lavish lifestyle. A Punjabi songwriter, he owns 40 acres at his native village in Faridkot district of Punjab.
He has recently been named as an accused in a snatching case, by the UT police.
Harkirat was arrested on Wednesday for snatching a mobile phone from a girl in a park of Sector 21, Chandigarh, where he had come to purchase a sim card,along with his friend Gurpreet Singh (25).
After getting the SIM, they saw a girl walking around in a park and allegedly planned to rob her of her mobile phone.
DSP (crime) Pawan Kumar said it was Gurpreet who went to the park to snatch the phone whereas Harkirat remained in the car. Gurpreet returned within a few minutes with the snatched phone, DSP Kumar said.
Kumar said the two are addicts and they committed snatching just for fun. Harkirat’s father is working as a clerk with the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) in Muktsar district of Punjab.
On August 10, the police received information that someone in a Maruti Ciaz had snatched a mobile phone from a girl who could not note down the registration number.
A case was registered. The DSP said the accused inserted the SIM card in the mobile phone, helping them trace him. Inspector Amanjot Singh said the two had been arrested at a naka in Sector 19.
A Class-12 pass out, Harkirat received IELTS coaching in Chandigarh. He is getting training in singing from Jagraon.
He has written a popular Punjabi song “Ik yaaro Bullet vi hoya lakh da, duja petrol vi mehnga ho gaya” for singer Jassimran Singh Keer. “Surme de Wang” is his another song he wrote.
