A pass-out from Government High School, Chandigarh and an alumna of Panjab University, Rachna (44) has made her mark in Canada by winning the legislative elections from British Columbia's Surrey-Green Timbers assembly segment as a New Democratic Party (NDC).

In all, seven Punjabis entered the BC assembly as the results came out on Wednesday. These include NDP leaders Rachna, Jagrup Brar, Ravi Kahlon, Jinny Sims, Raj Chouhan and Harry Bains, and Liberal Jas Johal.

According to news websites, British Columbia has its first minority government in 65 years as the Liberals squeaked out a razor-thin victory over the NDP on Tuesday. The Green party holds the balance of power for the first time. Christy Clark’s Liberals won 43 seats out of 87, the NDP under John Horgan got 41 and the Greens led by Andrew Weaver achieved a major breakthrough by picking up three seats.

Rachna is the daughter of Punjabi writer Dr Raghbir Singh and is married to Gurpreet Singh, a radio broadcaster and son of MS Sehgal, a Jalandhar resident.

She went to Canada in 2000 and had been working with Canadian Union of Public Employees before getting nominated. Her brother-in-law is Gurmeet Monty Sehgal, spokesman of Youth Akali Dal.
