Rippin Sindher's Short Film 'The Hideout' To Premiere At NYIFF On 3rd May!
When Rippin Sindher graduated UCLA, she had her life scripted out. She was going to go to law school, get a good paying job and stick to the Indian timeline. That is until a trip to Brazil with her brother changed her life. After returning from the Amazon jungle, she pursued her passion for writing and filmmaking while simultaneously working her day job at the Directors Guild of America. Her short film, The Hideout, will make its world premiere at the New York Indian Film Festival on May 3rd at the Village East Cinemas.

Shot on location in Los Angeles and Topanga State Park, the film delves into financial restraints that too often overshadow dreams and spotlights the courage one must have to take a leap of faith. The Hideout offers a slice of Indian-American culture and magical realism framed against a musical backdrop complete with original scores.
“As a first time female filmmaker and someone who is Punjabi, I wanted to showcase a voice I have seldom seen on screen. Someone I could identify with while exploring themes of creative liberation and female empowerment using an unconventional approach to storytelling,” explained Rippin.
She wrote, directed, stars in the film and sings. Her brother and creative partner, Gurinder Sindher, produced alongside. To transcend the office job storyline and pay homage to classic sounds of Bollywood cinema, the Sindhers worked with UK-based music producer, Taran Bains, to develop an audio experience for the narrative.
What began as an idea in 2015 led to a supportive Kickstarter community, the making of the film and an official selection into one of the oldest South Asian film festivals in the United States.

“This film is personal for both of us, but relatable to all,” said Gurinder, “It’s for anybody who’s ever had a dream, but been afraid to chase it.”
The siblings previously created a six-episode web series, The Man of Mystery, which garnered attention on YouTube. In addition to filmmaking, Rippin continues to write a blog about travel and film called The Rippin Blog and is a mentor for WriteGirl in Los Angeles. Gurinder starred as Farouk on Issa Rae's The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl. The duo is currently in development on their next project, Broken Drawer.
