We’ve seen several myths associated with Punjabis. For a non-Punjabi, these stereotypes actually become their identity but this can be a mere prejudice held against them. Well, being a Punjabi, you too must have seen several conjectures about you which most of the times are not true!
We’ve compiled a list of myths that need to be debunked because as Punjabis, we’re all sick of hearing them. Also Read : 10 Reasons Why A Punjabi Girl Is The Perfect Date!
JO MARZI HUNDA HOJE VEERE, GAAL NI KADDNI:
Though we all loved this superhit track but please don’t take it as a fact for all Punjabis don’t abuse. While many consider an abusive term as a helping verb, many have a control on them and are pretty polite, calm and composed.
JATT HUNNE AAN, FATTE CHAKK HUNDE AAN:
First of all, not all Punjabis are ‘Jatts’. So, to speak, overuse of the term, ‘Jatt’ makes every non-Punjabi think that all Punjabis are jatts but just like our nation, Punjab too has people from different castes. This also doesn’t mean that any caste is superior or inferior.
PUNJABIS ARE LOUD:
We are Punjabis not loudspeakers. The perception of our community being loud is really strong and all thanks to the stereotypical characters in Bollywood. Yes, I mean some Punjabis have their volumes which can’t go below 1000 decibels and like you we too don’t like it much. But some of us are really very soft spoken and polite.
ALL ABOUT ‘RUM-RUM-RUM, WHISKEY!'
Duh! There is an undeniable love of Punjabis for alcohol but that doesn’t mean Punjabis are synonym to alcohol. Why can we not normalise the fact that non-drinking Punjabis do exist. This might sound hard to believe but it is what it is!
KHAANE CHHOLE, DAKAAR BADAAMA DE
See, “When you’ve it, flaunt it”, the exuberance in the flamboyant lifestyle of Punjabis is really too much which they just like to splurge. Well, who doesn’t? Why this trait is restricted to Punjabis when most of us have a tendency to do so. Okay, if not everyone then not only ‘Punjabis’ too.
Btw, the idiom (Khaane Chhole, Dakaar Badaama De) is used to refer to a person who leaves no opportunity to project themselves as something they are not in reality.
TUSI BADE MAZAKIA HO!
For this one, Bollywood is to blame for. Right from stereotyping Punjabi characters and depicting their persona as somebody who are always cracking jokes. Undeniably, they’re fun loving but that doesn’t mean they would always be doing ‘balle balle shava shava’.
They can also be intelligent, wise and well-mannered. No wonder, we’ve seen several Punjabis making entire community proud on a global level.
BUTTER CHICKEN EVERYDAY?......AAN DO!
No dude, though the love of every Punjabi for non-veg is irresistible but they also like to have vegetarian food. If you had this myth of ‘Butter Chicken everyday’ then probably you’ve heard about ‘Sarson Da Saag’, ‘Makki Di Roti’, ‘Paranthe’ and other scrumptious dishes of Punjab.
