Baljeet Kaur - The First Indian Climber To Scale Four 8,000-Metre Peaks In Just 25 Days

It was yesterday only that we got the news of a turbaned guy who made it to Nike’s latest campaign and this accomplishment filled every Punjabi with pride.

Now a latest news of a Punjabi girl, Baljeet Kaur has added to the happiness as she becomes the first Indian mountaineer to scale four 8,000- metre peaks in just 25 days. The 27-year old, scaled Mt Lhotse only a day after she had climbed Mt Everest, the highest peak in the world standing tall at 8,848.86 m. Baljeet climbed the fourth highest mountain in the world on Sunday and ensured that she makes it to the record books for posterity.

Born in village Panjrol in Kandhaghat tehsil of Himachal’s Solan district, she was fascinated by mountains near her village. It was her interest in climbing that she climbed four peaks including Mt Everest (May 22), Mt Annapurna (April 28), Mt Kanchenjunga (May 12) and Mt Lhotse (May 23). She has three siblings and all of them would help their mother in the farm work. Her father, Amrik Singh was working as a bus driver with Himachal Road Transport Corporation. She pursued her studies from a nearby government School and that’s where she enrolled herself with the National Cadet Corps (NCC) which her tryst with mountaineering started.

She is also the first Indian female mountaineer to successfully climb the 8,167-m high Mt Dhaulagiri.
