Sad News: Punjabi Lyricist Dev Tharikewala Passes Away!

The Punjabi lyricist and writer Dev Tharikewala, who has penned many songs for veteran Punjabi singers, breathed his last on 25th January 2022 at the age of 82.

Dev was born Hardev Singh Gill during the British Raj. Then he adopted the pen name Hardev Dilgir and till date has written about 35 books of stories and songs like ‘Zaildarni’, ‘Rohee Da Phull’, ‘Ikk See Kurhi’ and many more. Later, he continued songwriting under the name, Dev Tharikewala. His lyrics/songs were sung by many singers like Karamjit Dhuri, Karnail Gill, Kuldeep Manak, Surinder Shinda, Swaran Lata, Gurcharan Pohli, Pammi Bai, Jagmohan Kaur, Narinder Biba and many modern Punjabi singers.  

Dev even wrote lyrics for many Punjabi films including 'Sassi Punnu' in which Kuldeep Manak sang his song, ‘Ajj Dhee Ik Raje Di’. Also Read: Kulwinder Billa Turns Producer With New Project!

His work in films included ‘Balbeero Bhabhi’, which featured his song ‘Sucheya Ve Bhabhi Teri’ and ‘Datta Te Bhagat Soormen’ and the title song of the blockbuster hit Punjabi film ‘Putt Jattan De’ (1981) was written by Dev Tharikewala and sung by Surinder Shinda.

However, his most famous work to date is considered the song ‘Maa Hundi Aa Maa’ which was sung by Kuldeep Manak. Also Read: “Pushpa” OTT Film Review

The demise of this legend is a huge loss for the Punjabi music industry and many people from the fraternity are mourning this loss.
