The Sikh community has a way of making their global presence felt worldwide, irrespective of the domain. One such person is Nav Bhatia, more popularly known as the ‘Raptors Superfan’. Now, Stampede Ventures, a Hollywood media company has decided to make a documentary on Bhatia’s life which will star actor Kal Penn.
Kalpesh Suresh Modi aka Kal Penn is an American actor and former White House staff member, with Gujrati parents. Penn will not only play the role of Nav Bhatia in the film, but is also producing the project. As an actor, Penn is known for playing ‘Kumar’ in the film series ‘Harold & Kumar’, and in series like ‘Clarice’, ‘Designated Survivor’ and ‘House’. He’s also appeared in series including ‘Sunnyside’, ‘The Big Bang Theory’, ‘Battle Creek’ and ‘24’, along with such films as ‘Superman Returns’ and ‘Van Wilder’. Talking about Nav Bhatia, the superfan came to Toronto amidst the Sikh riots of 1984. As a Sikh immigrant with no financial backing, Bhatia had to face the tough journey of supporting himself while facing the racism of being an outsider, before establishing himself as the most prolific car salesman and dealership owner in all of Canada. Over the years, basketball became a passion for him and he never missed a Toronto Raptors game. He has attended every Toronto Raptors home game from 1995 to 2020. Unfortunately, this streak ended in 2020 when Bhatia could no longer attend home games due to the COVID-19 Pandemic restriction.
He currently runs the Superfan Foundation as a way to unite people through the love of the sport. He also funds and organizes the Baisakhi halftime show once a year in April on the Raptors’ court, giving many Canadians an opportunity to celebrate Sikh New Year together. Before this biopic, the news channel CBC has already made a documentary called ‘Superfan: The Nav Bhatia Story’, which was screened recently. This is a big milestone in Sikh history as this is one of the few times a Hollywood film is being made about a Sikh man. Do comment below your thoughts on this!
