Indian American Sikh Scientist Awarded Padma Vibhushan Posthumously

On the occasion of 72nd Republic Day Indian government has announced the names of Padma Vibhushan awardees amongst which is Indian-American Sikh Scientist Narinder Singh Kapany. He has been awarded the honourable award posthumously. Known as the “father of fibre optics", Kapany was born on October 31, 1926, in Moga of Punjab. He passed away on December 4, 2020, in California at the age of 94. It is important to mention here that Srikant Datar and Rattan Lal have also been awarded the prestigious award for their immense contribution in the field of literature and education, science and engineering, respectively. Kapany wrote four books on fibre optics and entrepreneurship. Apart from this, he had more than 100 patents under his names throughout his career, his research works include fibre optics, lasers, solar energy etc. This great legend was named as one of the seven “unsung heroes” in Fortune magazine’s “Businessmen of the Century” issue. Nevertheless, he was a renowned personality who had a great interest in Sikh art and philanthropic activities. It was his interest towards the philanthropic activities that led him to start the Sikh Foundation which funded the preservation of several prized Sikh artworks. His foundation also publishes authentic Sikh research works, books, literature and art. It even runs libraries to promote and preserve rare Sikh literature.
