Hollywood actor, singer, songwriter and guitarist Laurence Fox has sparked a controversy by fuming over the Sikh soldier's character in the film 1917. Directed by Sam Mendes, 1917 is a 2019 epic war film based on World War 1, that was released on 17 January 2020 in India by Reliance Entertainment.

1917 Trailer:

Among its various accolades, the film received 10 nominations at the 92nd Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. At the 77th Golden Globe Awards the film won for Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director and at the 73rd British Academy Film Awards it received nine nominations. It also won the Producers Guild of America Award for Best Theatrical Motion Picture.

But seems like Laurence Fox is unhappy with the film as he's openly criticised the Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes for including a Sikh soldier in the film. Questioning the credibility of the film's story, Fox terms the inclusion of the Sikh soldier as 'incongruous'. The character that's being pointed out is that of Sepoy Jondalar, played by Nabhaan Rizwan, in the ranks of British forces. He also said during a show that such casting causes 'a very heightened awareness of the colour of someone's skin'.

In a podcast, Fox said, 'It's like, 'There were Sikhs fighting in this war' . . . OK, you're now diverting me away from what the story is. There is something institutionally racist about forcing diversity on people in that way.'

Though the man clarifies that his observations are not based on Rizwan's performance as according to him, 'He's great in it but seeing the Sikh appear in the British Army did sort of flick me out of what is essentially a one-shot film [because] it's just incongruous with the story'.

Twitter is backlashing at the actor for this remark of his. His comments have not gone down well with many who are now highlighting the role of Sikhs in the First World War.
