Actors may come and go, but the name of Balraj Sahni will always remain immortal. The Punjabi cinema will forever be indebted to him for his service. Millions and millions of Punjabis salute his efforts towards reviving Punjabi cinema, even today.
Born in 1913 in Rawalpindi district, Sahni did more than five dozen films in his career spanning three decades. His filmography includes timeless classics like Waqt, Do Bigha Zameen and Kabuliwala. However, he also 2 Punjabi movies in those days as an effort to pump up adrenaline into the veins of Punjabi cinema.
His first Punjabi movie was 1964's 'Satluj De Kande.' Upon release, 'Satluj De Kande' turned out to be a blockbuster. The film became so popular in those days that it was telecasted on Doordarshan not once or twice but thrice. This Balraj Sahni and Nishi starrer movie even fetched an award at the National Film awards. No doubt, the presence of Balraj Sahni was the primary reason why it fetched the audience in large numbers to the theatres.
Along with 'Satluj De Kande,' the legend worked in another Punjabi movie called 'Nanak Dukhiya Sab Sansar.' This was another movie of it's time which is remembered even today very fondly. Released in 1970, the film was a star-studded affair due to the presence of names like Prithviraj Kapoor, Pran, Achala Sachdev, Dara Singh and of course Balraj Sahni.
The film was based on the backdrop of partition, which revolved around the lives of two brothers who were separated in the chaos of riots. Interestingly, this movie was written, directed and produced by the He-Man Dara Singh.
Nevertheless, the songs of this movie were loved more than anything else. The tracks of this movie were so loved that it bagged the National Film Award for 'Best lyrics.'
Although Balraj Sahni did just 2 Punjabi movies in his entire career, these two were worth more than 200 movies.
