Forgotten Punjabi Singers: Rajinder Rajan - The Could Be Singing Sensation!

By: Gurwinder | March 30, 2021

Looking back at the old and golden era (the 40s to 90s) of Punjabi music, 40s to 60s was an era of Pushpa Hans and Kaur Sisters (Surinder Kaur & Prakash Kaur), then came Narinder Biba, Gurmeet Bawa, Jagmohan Kaur, Ranjit Kaur, Sarvjeet Kaur, and more. In the 80s and 90s Amarjot Kaur, Amar Noori, Dolly Guleria (started professional singing much later), Parminder Sandhu, Manpreet Akhtar, Sukhwant Kaur Sukhi, Kamaljit Neeru, Satwinder Bitti, Amrita Virk, Jaswinder Brar were names that were star singers.

But all were not fortunate enough like the above-mentioned names. In the coming days, we are going to share about some relatively unknown and less known female singers of the gone era (from the 1950s to late 1980s). Some of them were just like the flavor of the season, some got fame with hit songs, but soon faded away or some were simply shown the door. Few had it in them to make it big but left their profession for personal reasons. Some could not adjust or change themselves with time.

The first singer who deserves a mention here is Rajinder Rajan.

She was junior to Surinder Kaur and a contemporary of Narinder Biba & Jagmohan Kaur. In the late 50s, Rajinder got the opportunity to sing in front of the then CM of Punjab S.Pratap Singh Kairon. This marked the beginning of her singing career. She later sang duets with Harcharan Grewal, Mohammad Sadiq, and many others. An Army Officer saw her singing live, and approached her family with a marriage proposal.

She could have been listed among some of the finest female Punjabi singers. There was no condition that she will have to stop singing after marriage, but her husband's postings would be in far remote or non-Punjabi areas like Sikkim, Siliguri, etc, and that's how she remained away from the music career in all these years. In fact, she suggested Ranjit Kaur's name to Mohammad Sadiq, when she (Rajinder) stopped singing.

Rajinder Rajan could have been listed among some of the finest female Punjabi singers from this land but guess, destiny had something else in store for her.

Stay tuned for more such trivia!
