Indian Film Industry is one of the largest in the world with so many different language films releasing every year. Now, with regional cinema reaching new heights, even the number of regional films per year has increased. There have been few Punjabi films which were inspired or from Hindi films or other regional language films but there also have been cases where Hindi films got inspired by Punjabi movies.
Balbiro Bhabhi (1981) - Based on the famous folk tale of Sucha Singh Soorma, Balbiro Bhabhi had Veerendra, Shoma Anand & Gurcharan Pohli in lead roles. The film was successful at the box office. When Veerendra planned to direct a Hindi film, he took the subject of Balbiro Bhabhi and made a Hindi version of it which was titled Mera Lahoo (1987), starring Govinda, Kimi Katkar & Raj Kiran. The Hindi version was a moderate hit at the box office.
Jeeja Saali (1985)- It was one of the successful films of the year 1985. Jeeja Saali had Mehar Mittal, Arpana Choudhary, Satish Kaul & Bhawna Bhatt in lead roles. In 1992, Rishi Kapoor, Varsha Usgaonkar, Ashwini Bhave, Mohnish Behl & Kader Khan did a film called Honeymoon, which was based on a similar subject.
Dhee Rani (1988) - The Punjabi film was copied from Pakistani Punjabi film of the same title. It had Satish Kaul, Rama Vij, Rakesh Bedi and more, in principal roles. The film went unnoticed. Two years later, on the same subject, a Hindi film titled Ameeri Garibi (1990) released. It was a multi-starrer film with Jeetendra, Rishi Kapoor, Rekha, Raj Babbar, Poonam Dhillon & Neelam. This film was a moderate success at the box office.
Tunka Pyar Da (1989 ) - It was a romantic comedy film featuring Daljit Kaur, Surinder Walia, Surinder Shinda, Tina Ghai, Anil Pandit & Mehar Mittal. The film received an average response but was profitable with video rights. Based on the same story, a forgettable Hindi film Jaan Pehchaan (1991) was made, which had Sudha Chandran, Shekhar Suman, Satish Shah, Sushmita Mukherji, and Utpal Dutt in lead roles.
Saali Adhi Gharwali (1993) - The comic drama had Daljit Kaur, Shashi Puri, Arjun, Upasana Singh, Yograj Singh, Amzad Khan, Raza Murad, Ram Mohan, Anil Pandit, Huma Khan, Ved Goswami & Gurdas Maan in it. It was an average success at box office. Another forgettable film Tirchi Topiwale (1998) starring Chunky Pandey, Indir Kumar, Rituparna Sengupta, Monika Bedi & Anupam Kher was based on the same plot of Saali Adhi Gharwali, but flopped badly.
Surely there must be more such attempts where Hindi films were inspired from Punjabi films but for now, this is our list. Do you remember any other film? Tell us in comment section and we will update our list.
