Why Don't Our Punjabi Producers Take National TV Film Premieres Seriously?

By: Gurwinder | April 24, 2019

Those who like to watch movies on TV must have noticed that generally, we see many unfamiliar faces on it. Most of the movie channels show dubbed films from the South industry, especially during primetime. It isn't a new trend because dubbed south movies were being shown on movie channels since long but why are we talking about it today?

Well because off late there is a huge demand for these movies and they are a hit on TV even in the northern belt. Now, Punjabi movies are also being dubbed in Hindi for a national TV premiere. Most recently, Gurjind Maan's Punjab Singh was shown on UTV Action. While it was being mentioned that Punjab Singh is the first Punjabi film which was showcased on any Hindi movie channel (might be first for UTV Action, which is a hub of many dubbed South Films), but much before it, some other Punjabi films were also shown on Hindi movie channels.

Films which don't get theatrical release are being released on digital platforms or exclusively shown on TV channels. Mahesh Bhatt's Janam & Daddy were two films which were premiered on Doordarshan only. Later on, Zee came out with a couple of small films which had TV premiere only. That's when a cult Punjabi film's dubbed version was shown on it. The film was National Award Winning Chann Pardesi, and its Hindi Version was titled Sindhoor Ki Keemat. Another Punjabi Film Naseebo's Hindi Title was Ek Ladki Punjab Ki. Around the same time, films like Mahaul Theek Hai, Shaheed E Mohabbat, Shaheed Udham Singh, etc also had their Hindi dubbed version, which was released theatrically and was even shown on popular Hindi movie channels(Sony, Star). Later on, films like Des Hoya Pardes & Dil Apna Punjabi's Hindi versions were showcased on Sony and Star's channels.

Most recently Gippy Grewal's Jatt James Bond & Mirza, Diljit's Super Singh & Sardaar Ji, Honey Singh's Zorawar's dubbed version also made it to Hindi movie channels. In fact, Diljit's Super Singh outdid big Hindi films on TV ratings and was among top ten films of that year which was a big hit on TV. The makers of Subedar Joginder Singh and Sajjan Singh Rangroot had hinted that these films will also be dubbed in Hindi and may soon join the list of dubbed Punjabi films. Jora 10 Numbariya's dubbed version was also received well on TV.

When it comes to the dubbing of non-Hindi Films for TV, it is always a hush hush job with poor editing and badly composed music. Diljit expressed his displeasure and laughed over the dubbing of his films Sardaar Ji & Super Singh. But the same is the case with South Indian Films too. Some part of film investment can be recovered through such TV premieres and it is like another source of revenue for the producer.

Many flop Hindi films recovered their investment when their TV rights were sold to movie channels. Punjabi Film Industry must seriously look into more revenues options too. Punjabi films can have an upper hand as they don't have overly used adult content or bold scenes like Hindi movies.

A while ago, South star Mahesh Babu had given a statement that he keeps getting requests from North Indians to dub his films in Punjabi as they love his content. Now, this statement has two sides to it, one that Punjabi films need to be more content rich to attract such audience demand and two, the films must be available for tv preview.
