Earlier this month, a Patiala court sentenced singer Daler Mehndi to two years of imprisonment in connection with a 2003 human trafficking case after he was found guilty. However, he was later let off with a fine of Rs 10,000.

Sessions court has now suspended the jail sentence and supported the challenge out front by Daler Mehndi against the order of the Magistrate in the Patiala matter.

The judge found merits in the appeal and the grounds raised by Mr. Daler Mehndi against the judgement of the Magistrate by which he was convicted. The sessions judge suspended the sentence and granted bail to Mr. Mehndi. It is also orders that the bail will continue till the appeal is finally heard. Mr. Daler Mehndi had challenged the order pointing out illegalities and inconsistencies in the order of the Magistrate.

It had been alleged that Mehndi, his brother Shamsher and other had taken two troupes in 1998 and 1999 during the course of which 10 persons were taken to the US as group members and were dropped off illegally. A similar case has been alleged during Daler's trip to the US in the company of an actress, when he had allegedly dropped off three girls at San Francisco. AIt was also alleged that the brother duo had duped several people with the promise of relocating them to the USA, by charging them a hefty sum.

The Mehndi brothers allegedly took people to USA as troupe members but "dropped them off" illegally.

In 2003, one Bakshish Singh of Punjab's Balbehra village lodged a complaint alleging the accused duped him with the promise of sending him abroad. Soon after, Patiala Police registered a case against Daler and Shamsher on a complaint filed by a person named Bakshish Singh. 35 more complaints came up levelling charges of fraud against the two brothers. The complaints had alleged that two brothers had taken "passage money" from them to help them migrate to the US "illegally", but had failed to do so.

Patiala Police had even raided the offices of Daler Mehndi at Connaught Place in New Delhi and seized documents, including the case file of those who had paid the alleged "passage money" to the Mehndi brothers

In 2006, Patiala Police had filed two discharge petitions stating Daler Mehndi to be innocent, but the court set aside the petitions maintaining the singer was to be prosecuted.
