The Nooran Sisters- Sultana and Jyoti Nooran, who are a popular Sufi duo, hailing from the Sham Chaurasia gharana of music, have been accused of demanding dowry from their sister in law. Accordind to sources, a case has been registered against them on the complaint of their sister in law.
Nooran Sisters' brother got married in the year 2015 to a girl named Beerbaksh. According to Beerbaksh, the brother sister trio has been harrassing her for dowry ever since. She has now even thrown out of her home.
After allegations made by the victim, the court has summoned Nooran Sisters and their families on April 19.
Renowned for their outstanding work done in Coke Studio and various other platforms, Nooran Sisters were recently in Bangladesh for the Dhaka International Folk Fest 2017.
They got their first break in Bollywood with the movie Highway in 2014, with the music director A.R Rahman. After that they also sang in movies like Sultan, Mirzya, Dangal and Jab Harry met Sejal.
The sister duo and their father, Ustad Gulshan Mir, who is their teacher too, all originate from Jalandhar, in Punjab, India. They come from a family of very strong musical roots known for singing Sufi kalams.
Especially, their Nani Ji, Bibi Nooran, who was a popular singer in the 70s for her singing style and renditions of kalams. Gulshan Mir’s father, Ustad Sohan Lal was also known for his musical prowess. Sufi music is the main genre of music that the girls perform. Their live appearances have been predominantly at special remembrance melas and large sell-out shows in-front of many thousands of people.
With so much already in their kitty, it is suprising that such news has come up from their direction. What effect will it have on their growing fame graph??
Let's hope that things get settled amicably and this talent doesn't get wasted doing rounds in courts. Waise vi..a lot of people look upto them for inspiration, what message do they get from this incident!
Dowry demands are least expected, atleast from major earners like these...kis cheez di kami aa yaar.
