While Pollywood is busy making comedy movies Bollywood has taken a leap and working on a subject which the world should know about . Amrik Kaur, a Sikhni of Punjab, who has won the top gallantry award Shaurya Chakra for her bravery, is the story Bollywood is currently working on.
Amrik’s story is one which many of us don’t know and many of us have forgotten about this brave woman. Kaur has won the gallantry award as she fought with the Khalistani ultras in 1991. She fought back with them as a revenge to the brutal death of her husband by the Khalistanis. During her life, she killed at least 18 militants, and around 24 surrendered before her.
Now, her life is set to be depicted in a biopic, titled ‘Sardarni’, that goes on the sets next year.
Also known as the ‘Lioness of the border areas Amrik ‘s story is inspirational, unbelievable and nerve racking. Teenager Amrik was married to Subeg Singh of Bahadurpur and she helped her husband and worked with him at the India Pakistan border. On September 12, 1991 when Amrik, Subeg Singh and their domestic help Mukhtiar Singh were returning from the fields, the Khalistani militants attacked them. Her husband passed way in this attack. But this Sardarni promised herself to eradicate militancy from the state. For this she kept guns with herself and had 3 guns under her name, as told by her daughter in law Rupinder.
After losing her husband in 1991 to militants, unfortunately she lost her two sons in the year 2007 and 2010 because of ailments. And she herself left the world in 2014.
Not only have we forgotten her story but even the government has forgotten to talk about it. Her daughter in law claims that since her death the family hasn’t received a single penny from the state or the central government.
As for the biopic, it has been reported that Sunil Manchanda is producing the Hindi feature which is jointly being written by him with Raman Kumar, Amrik Gill and Abhishek Dudhaiya. The film will be directed by Dudhaiya. Manchanda, under his banner Mad Films, has produced ‘Tere Naam’, ‘Cheeni Kum’ and ‘Pa’ among others.
The makers of the movie told to a leading daily that they stayed in Punjab for six months and have done ample research on Amrik. They even met quite a few people from her village. The team will be shooting in 2018 and the film might also see a release next year.
