While most Punjabi cinema is filled with heartwarming, romantic tales or rib-tickling comedies, the industry does have a few gems that portray reality. There are Punjabi films that are based on hard-hitting events that changed the face of the nation, which these films have depicted to the best of their abilities.

1. Hawayein

This 2003 film is set against the backdrop of the 1984 Sikh genocide, ‘Hawayein’ is an attempt to show us the real stories of what people went through during one of the darkest chapters in the history of India. Directed by Amitoj Mann, the movie features Amitoj Mann, Babbu Mann, Anandee Tripathi, Mukul Dev.

2. Punjab 1984

One of the most famous movies based on this topic, ‘Punjab 1984’ focuses on families who suffered the consequences of the 1984 Sikh genocide. This one is considered to be one of Diljit Dosanjh’s best roles till date and even got him the award for ‘Best Actor’. Directed by Anurag Singh, ‘Punjab 1984’ casts Kirron Kher, Sonam Bajwa, Pawan Malhotra and Rana Ranbir alongside Dosanjh in the lead. 3. Subedar Joginder Singh

This biographical war film is based on the life of Joginder Singh, an Indian soldier who was killed in the 1962 Sino-Indian War and posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra. The movie is believed to depict the subedar's professional and personal life and how he handled it while serving his nation. Directed by Simerjit Singh, this 2018 drama casts names like Aditi Dev Sharma, Gippy Grewal, Guggu Gill, Sardar Sohi, Karamjit Anmol and Nirmal Rishi among others.

4. Shaheed Udham Singh

This 1999 film is another biographical drama; based on the life of revolutionary Udham Singh. The film focuses on incidents after the 1919 Amritsar Massacre and Udham Singh’s journey. While many are aware of the whole story thanks to the recent Vicky Kaushal starrer with the same storyline, this masterpiece was one of the costliest Punjabi films of its time. Directed by Chitraarth Singh, this one starred Raj Babbar as Udham Singha and even had cameo appearances by bigwigs of the Hindi Film industry. 5. Des Hoyaa Pardes

Another story that portrayed the plight of Sikhs after the 1984 violence against the community. However, this 2004 film was a little different since it showed the other side of the violence, aka people fleeing from the country for asylum. Directed by Manoj Punj, this one has Gurdas Maan, Juhi Chawla, Divya Dutta and Anup Soni in the lead, along with other cast members.
