The film ‘Umran Ch Ki Rakheya’ (What’s In The Age) starring Raj Babbar and Poonam Dhillon was released on the Punjabi OTT platform recently. Just a look at the star cast and the theme of the story makes the viewer want to watch the film. The film is directed by Simerjeet Singh while the story is written by Raju Verma. So without further delay, let’s dive into our review of this one!
Beginning with the story of the film, as the trailer revealed, the film is about old-aged people. The plot revolves around two people Pyarelal (Raj Babbar) and Kelly (Poonam Dhillon). Now what happens is that both of them start liking each other but their families are against their relationship owing to their age. So the story is quite simple and just tries to showcase that love sees no age and even if a person is old, they can fall in love. Moreover, the film throws light on the aspect that people or society should not be offended by two older-aged people falling in love.
Coming to the acting part of the project— it is without a doubt that if a project has names like Raj Babbar and Poonam Dhillon in it, the level of acting increases by itself! After all, both the actors have such films and experiences in their bag that it makes them almost legendary.
Other than that, the film also casts Anita Devgan, Sukhwinder Chahal and Gurjazz in it. All these actors also performed up to par. However, the importance, or rather the lack of, given to supporting actors in our industry is something that has always been a negative point. For example, the person playing Raj Babbar’s son or a relative of Poonam Dhillon, are all overlooked. Also Read: Aakanksha Sareen To Make Her Singing Debut In Pollywood!
Next, the film is helmed by Simerjit Singh. Well, this is the same person who directed films like the ‘Nikka Zaildar’ series, ‘Subedar Joginder Singh’ and ‘Muklawa’. So when we compare his past works with ‘Umran Ch Ki Rakheya’, it makes me doubt that it is the same person.
The reason this question even arises is that there are some scenes in the film which make the viewer think that why these scenes are even required in the film. One such example is when a police officer arrives at Kelly’s house and tells her about her chain while handing it over. At the same time, Kelly’s family is gathered in the background. Now the issue that comes up is not the actual scene but the way it is directed and the way the family reacts to the exchange. So much so that this scene made me go back and check the credits for the director!
At the same time, while the film casts Raj Babbar and Poonam Dhillon, it somehow does not use them properly. We can go as far as saying that their experience and acting has been wasted in this film. There are over-exaggerated, unrequired scenes in addition to regressive points of view which break the viewer’s interest. Also Read: Lekh Trailer Review: Swaad Aagya! What A Lovely Trailer
Then there is also the character of Gurjazz who we feel has been forced into the film. He is neither completely in the script, nor completely out of it. For those of you who are confused by this, what we mean is that Gurjazz comes in at certain points, says a random dialogue and goes off.
So if we talk about the direction, there were multiple flaws that we didn’t expect from a director like Singh and the movie does not use great actors up to their capabilities.
Coming onto the technical aspects of the film, one downfall of the Pollywood industry that has been pointed out time and again is the issue of dubbing and once again it is problematic in this film. Let us give you an example; a character is saying something as per his lip movement but the words we hear are quite different. What surprised us was that this issue existed even in the case of Raj Babbar’s dialogue delivery! Also Read: Udikan Saun Dian: A Lost Gem Of The 90s
The film also has two songs which sit well in it. Coming to the positives, Raj Babbar and Poonam Dhillon’s chemistry in the film was lovely and there were even some cute moments between the duo which made us go awww. So overall, it is the lead pair— Raj Babbar and Poonam Dhillon which save the whole show.
