Here’s All You Should Know About Deep Sidhu!

The news of Deep Sidhu’s demise shook not just members of the film industry but all of Punjab. The lawyer, actor and social activist had caught the spotlight during the farmer's protest in India and since then he had been an inspiration for the youth of Punjab. 

So today, while remembering and praying for his soul to rest in peace, let’s look back at his journey from a lawyer to an actor and then a social activist whose voice stood strong even amidst the chaos. Also Read: Roles To Remember: Mohni From Teeja Punjab

Deep Sidhu took birth on 2 April 1984 in the holy city of Muktsar (now called Sri Muktsar Sahib). His father, Sardar Surjit Singh was a lawyer. Unfortunately, his mother passed away when he was a young child, i.e. only 4-years-old.

Growing up Sidhu took an interest in modeling. In 2006 he took in a modeling competition called ‘Grasim Mr. India’ where he was titled ‘Grasim Mr. Personality’ and ‘Grasim Mr. Talented’. Other than that he even won the ‘Kingfisher Model Hunt’ award in 2011. Throughout his career as a model, Sidhu walked the ramp in Mumbai for designers such as Hemant Trivedi, Rohit Gandhi, and others. Also Read: Blog: 10 Punjabi Lyricists Who Turned Singers!

However, unsatisfied with his modeling career, Deep Sidhu followed in his father’s footsteps and became a barrister. Though short-lived, his work as a lawyer was with renowned names like Sahara India Pariwar, Hammonds (who managed accounts of Disney, Sony and other Hollywood companies) and Balaji Telefilms. What’s more, Ekta Kapoor the joint managing director and creative head of Balaji Telefilms, told him he should act but he did not follow up on her suggestion immediately.

So how did he enter the acting field?

It was only in 2015 when he came across Dharmendra who pushed him to try his hand in acting and got him his debut role as ‘Jogi’ in ‘Ramta Jogi (2015)’. He even won the PTC Punjabi Film Award for ‘Best Male Debut’ for ‘Ramta Jogi’! Also Read: Did You Know That Ragini Khanna Has Done A Punjabi Film Too?

But it was his second film, 'Jora 10 Numbaria (2017)' which made him popular. In this one, he played a gangster’s role. After that Deep Sidhu acted in movies like ‘Rang Punjab’, ‘Saade Aala’ and ‘Desi’ too! He also appeared in the sequel of this film ‘Jora - The Second Chapter’, which didn't do well due to the Covid-induced lockdown.

Deep Sidhu shot into the limelight after his English-speaking videos supporting the farmers' agitation that went viral on social media. Then he was accused of being the key conspirator behind the Red Fort violence that took place on January 26, 2021. Police even accused him of fuelling chaos at the site. He was arrested on February 9, 2021 and he pleaded innocence but after his bail plea was approved, he was arrested a second time on a police case filed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). ASI had accused Sidhu of damaging the monument and vandalism by the rioters. He was released on bail on April 17, 2021 after remaining in police custody for 70 days.

Delhi Police in May 2021 filed a 3,000-page charge sheet against Deep Sidhu in the Red Fort violence case. Not just this, he was even facing a case under SC/ST act registered in October 2021 by the Jalandhar Police for hurting the sentiments of the Dalit community. Deep Sidhu was usually seen quoting the Sikh leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, whom he was inspired by. Moreover, in September 2021, had also formed an organization titled 'Waris Punjab De' to fight for the rights of the protesting farmers.

But did you know that Sidhu had been politically active since 2019 and had campaigned for a BJP MP too!?

Well, Sidhu step foot into politics in 2019 during the Indian general elections where he campaigned for Gurdaspur BJP MP Sunny Deol. Considering that he entered the film industry through Dharmendra, he had close relations with the family. So in December 2020, during farmers' protest, farmer unions even used Sidhu's pictures with Prime minister Narendra Modi and Sunny Deol to show the link of BJP and RSS in protests—a claim which was later denied by Sidhu. 

Sadly, Sidhu breathed his last on 15th February 2022 at the mere age of 37. He was traveling back from Delhi to Bathinda, Punjab when his car crashed with a truck on the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) highway near Sonipat, Haryana. The actor is said to have died on the spot. There have been rumors about Sidhu’s death being a political stint and such but without proof. To tell you more, the couple had just celebrated a romantic Valentine’s Day the previous day and had even posted pictures on social media.

His girlfriend, Reena Rai is a US-based actress. She was also Sidhu’s co-star in the Punjabi film ‘Rang Panjab’. She won Miss South Asia in 2014 and the couple was starring together in their upcoming film ‘Desi’. Last year, after his bail, Deep had taken to Instagram to express his love for Rai. It is believed that Sidhu was just at a beginning of a long successful journey in social activism thanks to his strong opinions, ability to stand up for the unheard and leadership qualities. However, he will be remembered as his contributions for the benefit of Punjab and its people cannot be erased. Sidhu had created a space for himself in everyone’s hearts and that is why from singers to politicians, everybody mourned his death.
