By: Harleen Kaur | February 14, 2022

The Hindi film ‘Gehraiyaan’ was made available on the OTT streaming platform, Amazon Prime Videos on 11th February 2022. The film is directed by Shakun Batra and casts Deepika Padukone, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ananya Panday, Dhairya Karwa and Naseeruddin Shah in it.

As the title suggests ‘Gehraiyaan’ means depth which led to many viewers expecting a deep and meaningful movie after they saw the trailer. But is the film worth watching? Also Read: The Welsh Actress Who Was Part Of A Punjabi Song! Do You Know Her?

Story:

Well the story of the film is between two couples— Alisha & Karan (played by Deepika Padukone and Dhairya Karwa) and Tia & Zain (played by Ananya Pandey and Siddhant Chaturvedi). The four of these go on a trip together since Alisha and Tia are cousins.

As they are planning the trip a few things come to light. One, they find out that Tia and Karan are childhood best friends and second, Alisha and Zain start a secret relationship as they are attracted to each other. Moving ahead we see how complications arise and how the complexity of these relationships works. While on one hand we see how these couples move forward in their relationships, on the other we see each character’s individual past. And somehow all four characters have one or another traumatic event that happened to them during their childhoods.

So among these four, the film is mostly based around Alisha aka Deepika Padukone. If we talk about her specifically, Alisha’s past is the most traumatic due to which she is carrying it with her to date. Moreover, she makes a conscious effort every step of the way to move away from her past experiences. Hence all these people are carrying their past baggage which in one way or the other affect their life decisions and relationships.

Now as we move forward the story keeps on unfolding but let us tell you that the story which was showcased as a romantic and intimate film during its promotions definitely takes a twist and the whole ‘it is a romantic film’ idea shifts.

If we review the story, it is well written and shot but it also feels like at certain points the viewer might feel that there is no clarity. The sub-plots and secondary characters are left without explanation. For example, Karan aka Dhairya’s character is treated as a side character and his story is not delved into which feels like a missed opportunity. Also, Naseeruddin Shah, who plays the father of Alisha, is left underutilized and considering what a great actor Shah is, his character could have been quite powerful all the while making a bigger impact on the storyline.

Direction:

The director of the story is Shakun Batra. He gained a huge fan following after making ‘Kapoor & Sons (2016)’ which is, according to us, an unmissable film. In that one too, the film’s focus was familial relationships and the ups and downs of it.

Not to give out any spoilers but in ‘Gehraiyaan’ no one expected the story to be anything other than romance but the twist that Batra puts in gives the audience a surprise. So this film is not only a romance but also showcases a corporate game and even becomes a crime-thriller piece.

Undoubtedly, Shakun Batra as always has triumphed as a director who wishes to show realism and complexity in his projects but also there are issues regarding clarity in the storyline, especially during the last half hour of the film. Moreover, the ending of the film seems a little abrupt which makes the whole film lack in certain aspects. Also Read: International Sikh Influencers You Might Have Missed!

Acting:

The film is a multi-starrer with Deepika Padukone, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ananya Panday, Dhairya Karwa and Naseeruddin Shah. As mentioned before, Naseeruddin Shah’s character needed much more screentime, depth and spotlight to show how he feels as a father whose daughter doesn’t talk to him!

Coming to Deepika Padukone’s role she indeed stole the whole show all thanks to her ability to portray the emotions and make herself seen on screen. Her performance throughout the movie depicted her experience as an actor considering she makes every scene she was a part of seem more impactful and powerful.

Next, Siddhant Chaturvedi who proved his capabilities as an actor in ‘Gully Boy (2019)’ was somewhat overpowered by Deepika Padukone. No doubt that Chaturvedi did a great job in depicting his character but the fact that Deepika was the one opposite him made all the difference! Then there is Ananya Pandey; In ‘Gehraiyaan’, Pandey played her emotions with subtlety and did not overdo it. Pandey has often been the victim of nepotism jokes owing to her not-so-good performance in ‘Student Of The Year 2 (2019)’. So in ‘Gehraiyaan’ many expected her to showcase her abilities in a better manner. But sadly, she was also treated as a side character and not given as much of the limelight as expected.

Lastly, Dhairya Karwa’s character is also not focused on much, his only role is as Alisha’s boyfriend. So as much as he was given, Karwa played it up to par.

Conclusion:

In brief, the film uses sounds and shots very well but there was a lack in clarity at many points in the story. The direction of the story proved confusing and abrupt but at the same time, it was not as predictable as movies usually are. The casting was done appropriately, however, the age representation is not proper because we don’t think that Deepika Padukone and Ananya Pandey are the same age, as portrayed in the film!
