The Punjabi industry is famous worldwide irrespective of the region and language. So many non-Punjabi people from the Hindi industry or even the South of India usually try their hand at Punjabi movies or songs. Among all these names, there is also Banita Sandhu.
Now by her name one would assume that Sandhu is a Punjabi, however, her birth and upbringing took place in Caeraelon, Wales. Her parents were second-generation British Indians. Sandhu moved to London when she was 18-years-old for her degree in English Literature. What’s more, is that she began her acting career when she was just 11! So you know she was a talented actor since the beginning, however, she came to India to pursue this career. You may recognize her from her role as ‘Shiuli Iyer’ in Varun Dhawan’s ‘October (2018)’. This was her debut in Bollywood and she was even nominated for the ‘Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut’. Recently, she even played ‘Reshma’ in the much appreciated ‘Sardar Udham (2021)’.
Other than Hindi, she has also acted in the Tamil film ‘Adithya Varma (2019)’ and English film, ‘Eternal Beauty (2019)’. Not just this, she has also tried her hand in television through the American Science Fiction TV series ‘Pandora (2019)’. If we go back to the beginning of her acting journey, Sandhu appeared in a chewing gum advert which had the song "Ek Ajnabee Haseena Se" as the background score; and another advert, for Vodafone India, which was broadcast during the Indian Premier League cricket season.
The reason we are talking about her is her trial in the Punjabi industry. Sandhu paved her way into the widespread Punjabi music industry in 2018 when she featured in Diljit Dosanjh’s ‘Jind Mahi’. Yes, you read it right! The ‘October’ actress made it straight to the top of the list when she got to model in a Dosanjhawala song as her debut! To tell you more about the song, ‘Jind Mahi’ was a huge hit when it reached the audience in 2018. The song has a romantic, breezy yet upbeat tune.
