Padma Vibhushan awardee Balwant Moreshwar Purandare Passes Away At 99!

Balwant Moreshwar Purandare, popularly known as Babasaheb Purandare was an eminent historian, writer and theatre personality from Maharashtra. The Padma Vibhushan awardee breathed his last in Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital of Pune, Maharashtra, on 15th November 2021. Also Read: Singer Preety Panesar To Make Her Debut In ‘Zeba’!

A celebrated author and historian, Babasaheb was known for his literary works especially around Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. His other works include books titled Raja Shiva-Chatrapati and Kesari, and a book on the life of Narayanrao Peshwa. But the most well-known of his works is the drama, Jaanata Raja, a widely popular play on Shivaji published and first staged in 1985. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest award on 25th January 2019.

The 99-year-old was diagnosed with Pneumonia a week ago, due to which he was hospitalized. A doctor stated that Babasaheb was on ventilator support in the city hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU). However, on 14 November, his health deteriorated after which he had been in an extremely critical condition, the doctor claimed. After hearing the news, Prime Minister Narendra Modi too shared his condolences saying “I am pained beyond words. The demise of Shivshahir Babasaheb Purandare leaves a major void in the world of history and culture. It is thanks to him that the coming generations will get further connected to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. His other works will also be remembered.”
