These Women Centric Punjabi Movies Are A Must Watch

The past few years have been the years of several experiments in terms of subjects and themes chosen in our Punjabi industry.

In this male dominated industry, who would have imagined that there will be a few filmmakers who can take a bold step of coming up with female – centric Punjabi films. So, let’s have a look at the list!

GUDDIYAAN PATOLE (2019)

Featuring Sonam Bajwa and Tania in the lead roles along with Gurnam Bhullar, Nirmal Rishi, Honey Mattu and others was a performance based film which depicted the story of two sisters and their grandmother.

The girls returned from abroad confront their maternal family where relations were superficial but then things change for good with a romantic angle.

NEEDHI SINGH (2016)

Kulraj Randhawa had made her comeback with this impactful film. The film was about a pleasant and fun loving girl named, Needhi who believed in living life to the fullest. Being a strong headed woman she doesn’t tolerate any kind of injustice and standing up for her close friend who lost her life after being assaulted sexually leads to troubles in her life.

The strong film is an under rated film which should surely be added on to your watch list.

ARDAB MUTIYARAN (2019)

How can we forget to add this on to our watch list. This Sonam Bajwa and Mehreen Pirzada in the lead roles along with debutant Ajay Sarkaria, Ninja and others was a commercial success.

Sonam was the show stealer with her impressive dialect that she had adapted for her role and being a full-blown, loud mouth rebel. The movie portrays the story of Babbu Bains who struggles to live on her own terms after getting married.

GELO (2016)

Another yet underrated movie starring Jaspinder Cheema with Gurjit Singh, PavanRaj Malhotra, Aditya Tarnach and others!

So, the movie was inspired from the novel of Ram Sarup Ankhi, 'Gelo'. The film portrays multiple themes of social significance with a strong female character (Gelo) who stands up for her rights and fights against offenders who eye her piece of land. It also shows the plight of poor farmers around Chandigarh and the course that women sometimes have to take to save their land. DAANA PAANI (2018):

Daana Paani starring Simi Chahal and Jimmy Sheirgill is not just the story of a soldier and an oppressed village girl but a connection that is built around a broken relationship.

The initial first half of the film is heavy enough to bring out tears.

CHANNO (2016):

The movie starring Neeru Bajwa and Binnu Dhillon in the lead roles is a story of a girl whose husband leaves for Canada and never comes back. Being a pregnant woman, she travels to Canada with Binnu (Neeru is her love interest in the movie) in search of him and if she finds him or not is the story of the film. Unless you’re living in your own bubble, it’s hard to ignore the impact of these films.
