Calgary Gets Its First Punjabi Descent Female Mayor, Jyoti Gondek!

Prabjhote Kaur "Jyoti" Gondek becomes the first female Mayor of Calgary, Canada and she has a Punjabi heritage!

Jyoti Gondek was born in London, UK to Punjabi parents Jasdev Singh Grewal, a lawyer, and Surjit Kaur Grewal. She came to Canada with her parents in the early 1970s, initially settling in Manitoba.

She was awarded a Ph.D. in urban sociology from the University of Calgary. Gondek also holds a bachelor's degree in criminology/sociology from the University of British Columbia, and a master's degree in organizational sociology from the University of Manitoba. Gondek began her journey in politics after she was elected as a councilor of ward number 3 of Calgary city in October 2017. She has helped various communities for almost 20 years and her experience provided her with the knowledgeable needs of North Calgarians.

Gondek, who was elected the Mayoral candidate of Calgary this morning, will replace Mayor Naheed Nenshi after his 11 years in office. When Gondek took the stage at her campaign headquarters on Monday night, she promised to lead with “courage, conviction and humility”. She won with about 45% votes, leaving behind the 26 other candidates. Ex-Mayor Naheed Nenshi even tweeted congratulating Gondek for her win.
