The film ‘Chatur Singh Two Star’ was directed by Ajay Chandhok, who even directed the 2019-Punjabi film ‘Saadi Marzi’. The film, released in 2011 starred prominent Bollywood names such as Sanjay Dutt, Ameesha Patel, Anupam Kher, Shakti Kapoor, Suresh Menon, Gulshan Grover, Satish Kaushik, Sanjay Mishra and Murali Sharma, to name a few.
The story was about a police detective, Chatur Singh (Sanjay Dutt) who goes on a secret mission to South Africa in order to clear up his botched image. The mission is related to the murder of a politician and a cache of diamonds. However, things get complicated when he has to deal with a bunch of loonies— a crazy mafia don (Satish Kaushik), a weird taxi driver (Sanjay Mishra), a hysterical boss (Anupam Kher), and a pretty damsel in distress (Ameesha Patel). Add to this chaotic fray, Pappu Panther (Suresh Menon), who is Chatur’s right-hand man; he adores and worships his master Chatur, which makes him an even bigger idiot than Chatur himself! The comedy flick was released in four different languages including Punjabi, Hindi, Bhojpuri and English! Despite the cast, language and even the genre of the film, it did not fare well with the cinema-goers. But did you know these facts about the movie?
First, the movie is based on the novel ‘Chalaak Jasoos’ by Nagpur-based writer M Raza. It is also said to be a version of the Hollywood movie ‘The Pink Panther (2006)’ by director Shawn Levy. But Sanjay Dutt, in an interview said that, “There is no similarity between the character Jacques Clouseau (Steve Martin) and Chatur Singh. None of the movies of that series worked in India. Why would we copy it?”
Second, the film was completed in the year 2007, however, it remained unreleased till 2011, when it was finally released four years later than planned. When asked about the cause of the delay, the producers said that due to bad market conditions, we couldn’t find a proper release. Last, Dutt has not only acted in the film, but he has also sung two songs in the film— one is, ‘Murga Anda Dega Do Oye Oye’, which is a hip hop track and the other is an item number called ‘Singh Singh Chatur Singh Coming’.
