Blog: Did You Know These Famous Personalities Are From Jalandhar!

Punjab is not just a land of culture, it is also filled with talented people who’ve made a name for themselves.

So here’s a list of 20 famous people who were born in the Jalandhar city of Punjab.

Diljit Dosanjh

Our favorite Dosanjhawala, none other than singer, actor and songwriter Diljit Dosanjh has not only made a name for himself in Punjab but all over the world!

From his first album in 2004, ‘Ishq Da Uda Ada’ with Finetone Cassettes to his most recent, ‘MoonChild Era’, the Diljit turned Daljit has given us uncountable hits over the 17 years of his career.

Not only as a singer, but Diljit also won the audience’s hearts with his acting in movies like  ‘Jatt & Juliet’, ‘Jatt & Juliet 2’, ‘Punjab 1984’, ‘Sardaar Ji’, ‘Ambarsariya’, ‘Sardaar Ji 2’, ‘Super Singh’, ‘Sajjan Singh Rangroot’ and ‘Shadaa’.

The superstar was born to a Sikh family in the Dosanjh Kalan village of Phillaur tehsil of Jalandhar District. The village is famous today because of his fame! 

Hans Raj Hans

The singer turned politician, Hans Raj Hans was born in Shafipur, a village near Jalandhar.

Since his teen years, Hans was trained in singing by Ustad Puran Shah Koti. Later, he learned from music director Charanjit Ahuja. Hans has given us a number of hit songs and has also worked in multiple Bollywood movies. He even worked with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, in the 1999 movie ‘Kachche Dhaage’.

He has even worked as an honorary music professor at Washington DC University and San Jose State University. In 2009, he turned to politics; however, he did not leave the music field.

Navraj Hans

An Indian singer, actor, entrepreneur, cricket player and performer, Navraj Hans is a master of many hats. He is the elder son of Hans Raj Hans and the son-in-law of famous singer Daler Mehndi.

Hans has done playback singing for several Bollywood and Pollywood movies. His song ‘Saiyaan’, by Sony Music India featured in the Punjabi movie ‘Burrraahh’. His song ‘Jind meriye’ is from the Bollywood movie ‘Purani Jeans’. He even sang the song ‘Chote Chote Peg’ with singers Neha Kakkar and Yo Yo Honey Singh for 2018 movie ‘Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety’ and ‘Mundiyaan Tu Bachke’ with Palak Muchhal for ‘Baaghi 2’.

He made his acting debut in Jaswinder Singh’s 2014 movie ‘Marriage Da Garriage’. Hans was also born and brought up in Jalandhar.

Yuvraj Hans

Singer-actor and the second son of Hans Raj Hans, Yuvraj Hans made his acting debut in Pollywood with the 2011 box-office success ‘Yaar Anmulle’ by director Anurag Singh. He was applauded for his character ‘Deep’ in the film. The sequel of this movie is releasing soon too!

As far as his singing career goes, Hans released his first album, ‘Yuvraj’ in December 2015, which features nine songs including the hit single ‘Paani’ released under Amrinder Gill’s label ‘Rhythm Boyz Entertainment'. Yuvraj Hans has also lent his voice for the soundtracks of several Punjabi movies. He started his singing career with the song ‘Tere Naina’, featured in the 2012 Punjabi movie Pinky Moge Wali.

He was born and even completed his college in Jalandhar. Currently, he alternates between Jalandhar and Mumbai.

Anurag Singh

Indian movie director-producer Anurag Singh is known as a director for ‘Punjab 1984’, ‘Jatt and Juliet’ Series and ‘Yaar Annmulle’. His works as a director are known to most cinema-goers.

He made his production debut with the 2017 Diljit Dosanjh starrer ‘Super Singh’ which broke many records. His production company is called ‘Brat Films’. He even produced the comedies ‘Shadaa’ and ‘Puaada’.

He directed a Bollywood movie in 2007 called ‘Raqeeb’, which did not perform well at the time. However, his film ‘Kesari’ got him his big break as a director in Bollywood.

The director was born and brought up in Jalandhar and is currently residing in Mumbai.

Nooran Sisters

The ‘Patakha Guddi’ song fame— Nooran Sisters, namely Jyoti Nooran and Sultana Nooran, are a Sufi singing duo. Their singing style is from the Sham Chaurasia Gharana, which is a classical music duet technique.

The sisters’ singing talent was discovered by their father when Sultana Nooran was seven and Jyoti Nooran was five. From that moment onwards, they were trained by their father Ustad Gulshan Mir.

The sisters made their debut in Bollywood with the ‘Patakha Guddi’ song from Alia Bhatt’s film ‘Highway’, which they even won awards for. They have even sung in films like ‘Bharat’, ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’, ‘Dangal’ and ‘Sultan’. They hail from the city of Jalandhar in Punjab. 

Master Saleem

Master Saleem, also called Shahzada Saleem is known for his work as a devotional singer & playback singer in Bollywood films, like ‘Heyy Babyy’ (2007), ‘Dostana’ and ‘Love Aaj Kal’ (2009). He has also released private albums, of Punjabi Music, Religious and Sufi music.

He was born in Shahkot, a tehsil of Jalandhar district. As the son of Ustad Puran Shah Koti (who was also the guru of folk singers, Hans Raj Hans, Jasbir Jassi and Sabar Koti) Saleem began learning music from his father at the age of six.

When he was seven, he gave his first public performance at the opening ceremony of Bathinda Doordarshan (TV station), with his song, ‘Charkhe Di Ghook’, and thus earned the name Master Saleem. Soon he started appearing on TV shows like, ‘Jhilmil Taare’.

 

Harbhajan Singh

Former Indian cricketer, cricket commentator and actor, Harbhajan Singh or as we lovingly call him, Bhajji was captain of IPL team ‘Mumbai Indians’ and ‘Punjab’ for the 2012–13 ‘Ranji Trophy’ season. He was even awarded the Padma Shri, in 2009.

Singh made his Test and One Day International (ODI) debuts in early 1998. His career was initially affected due to investigations into his bowling action, as well as several disciplinary incidents. However, in 2001, with cricketer Anil Kumble injured, Harbhajan's career was resurrected after the then Indian captain Sourav Ganguly called for his inclusion in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy team.

As an actor, he has made special appearances in movies like ‘Mujhse Shaadi Karoge’ (2004), 2013 Punjabi movie ‘Bhajji in Problem’. He has also been a part of the reality TV shows ‘Roadies’. Singh was born in Jalandhar, Punjab and lives there to date.

Avneet Kaur

Born in 2001, the young TV actress, dancer and model— Avneet Kaur began her career when she was just 8 years old. She is most famous for her role as Princess Yasmin in the Sony SAB 2018 show, ‘Aladdin - Naam Toh Suna Hoga’.

She began her career in the industry with Zee TV's 2010 dance show ‘Dance India Dance Li'l Masters’ and then went on to the 2011 ‘Dance Ke Superstars’, where she joined the team of ‘Dance Challengers’.

Kaur made her acting debut in 2012 with Life OK's ‘Meri Maa’ where she played the character of ‘Jhilmil’. She was born in Jalandhar, however, shifted to Mumbai to start her career.

Varun Sharma

Did you know that our favorite comic character, ‘Choocha’ from ‘Fukrey’ (2013) i.e. none other than Varun Sharma also hails from Jalandhar!

His first film, which was ‘Fukrey’ was a huge success and got him a lot of fame. After that, he also starred in movies like ‘Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon’ (2015), ‘Dolly Ki Doli’ (2015), ‘Dilwale’ (2015), ‘Fukrey Returns’ (2017), ‘Chhichhore’ (2019), ‘Arjun Patiala’ (2019) and ‘Roohi’ (2021), in all of which he played roles of comedic characters.

He even made an appearance in the 2015 Punjabi movie ‘Angrej’ as a young Amrinder Gill.  

Surbhi Jyoti

Surbhi Jyoti is an Indian TV actress known for her portrayal of ‘Zoya Farooqui’ in Qubool Hai and ‘Bela Sehgal’ in Naagin 3.

She began her career in regional theatre and films and has been a radio jockey too! She has previously worked in Punjabi language films like ‘Ik Kudi Punjab Di’, ‘Raula Pai Gaya’ and ‘Munde Patiala De’ and has even been a part of Punjabi television series like ‘Akiyaan To Door Jayen Na’ and ‘Kach Diyan Wanga’.

At the end of 2012, she made her debut in Hindi serials with Zee TVs ‘Qubool Hai’, from where she rose to fame. Jyoti is also one of the famous personalities who come from Jalandhar.

Tarsem Singh

Tarsem Singh Dhandwar, famously known as Tarsem, is an Indian director who has worked on films, music videos, and commercials.

His directional movies include, ‘The Cell’ (2000), ‘The Fall’ (2006, also screenwriter and producer), ‘Immortals’ (2011), ‘Mirror Mirror’ (2012), and ‘Self/less’ (2015).

He has also directed commercials for brands such as Nike and Coca-Cola. In 2003, Tarsem directed one of the most elaborate Pepsi commercials to date. It combined a gladiator theme with the Queen's ‘We Will Rock You’. The commercial starred Enrique Iglesias in the version of the commercial aired in Europe and North America and Amr Diab in the version aired in the Arab world.

In 2020, Tarsem made his return to music videos with Lady Gaga's single ‘911, his first in 26 years. Tarsem comes from a Punjabi Sikh family in Jalandhar, Punjab.

Jazzy B

Jaswinder Singh Bains, known by his stage name Jazzy B, is an Indo-Canadian Punjabi singer, actor, and songwriter. His first album ‘Gugiyan Da Jora’ was released in 1993. He was born in Jalandhar, however, his family moved to Surrey, Canada when he was just five.

In 2012 he made his debut with the movie ‘Best of Luck’ as an actor with Punjabi singer and actor Gippy Grewal and Miss India Universe 2008 Simran Kaur Mundi.  Jazzy has also made special appearances in several movies like 2013’s ‘Jatt and Juliet 2’ and ‘Romeo Ranjha’ (2014).

Jazzy is a huge fan of veteran singer Kuldeep Manak. Till date, he has released 12 studio albums and two religious ones. He has collaborated on many tracks.

Ranvir Shorey

An Indian actor and former video jockey, Ranvir Shorey made his debut in ‘Ek Chhotisi Love Story’ (2002) opposite actress Manisha Koirala.

He started his career along with his friend and co-actor Vinay Pathak. He was the host of the successful talk show ‘Ranvir Vinay Aur Kaun?’ and ‘The Great Indian Comedy Show’ which aired on STAR One.

Shorey has starred in a number of high-profile films such as ‘Jism’ (2003), ‘Lakshya’ (2004), ‘Traffic Signal’ (2007), ‘Bheja Fry’ (2007) and the critical and commercial hit ‘Mithya’ (2008). He is born and bred in Jalandhar, Punjab.

Rannvijay Singh

The MTV India fame, Rannvijay Singh is an Indian actor, television personality and VJ. He began his career from the first season of MTV Roadies, which he won. From there on he has been a part of the show be it as an anchor, gang leader or a host, which he is currently.

He has also hosted other MTV shows including MTV Stuntmania, MTV Force India The Fast and The Gorgeous, MTV Splitsvilla, MTV Scooty Pep Diva and MTV Troll Police.

Singh made his Bollywood debut with the 2009 film ‘Toss: A Flip of Destiny’. He has also acted in ‘London Dreams’ (2009) and ‘Action Replayy’ (2010). Singh made his debut in Pollywood in the year 2011, starring in Jimmy Shergill's ‘Dharti’.

He was born in Jalandhar, Punjab but since his father was an Army officer, most of his life was spent in different places all over India.

Sukhbir Singh

Often referred to as the ‘Prince of Bhangra’, Sukhbir Singh is an Indian singer. The genre for his singing is ‘Bhangra’ music but it may vary from a fusion to purely Punjabi.

Sukhbir Singh was born in Bhogpur, Jalandhar, but moved with his family to Nairobi, Kenya, and was raised there. He began recording songs in 1991 and shifted to Dubai in 1992, where he is settled since then.

His first album, ‘New Stylee’, was recorded in Dubai and had many foreign influences. The album though, was nominated and won the 1996 Channel V Awards in three categories: Best Debut Album, Best Male Vocalist and Best Music Video (for "Punjabi Munde").

His other songs and albums include ‘Prince of Bhangra Volume 1’ (2000), ‘Sukhbir - Greatest Hits (2002)’, ‘Oh ho ho ho (2017)’ from Hindi Medium, ‘Sauda Khara Khara’ from the 2019 film Good Newwz. He even sang the song ‘Dil laga’ from Dhoom 2.

Akhil

Akhil Pasreja aka Akhil is a famous Punjabi playback singer, songwriter and music performer.

In February 2014, he made his music debut with his first single ‘Muradaan’ which was released under HSR Entertainment (formerly Yellow Music). He previously sang a song titled ‘Pee Lain De’ in 2012 though.

His Punjabi song ‘Khaab’ which was released in February 2016 got attention from fans worldwide. It became so famous that it was remade into a hindi version ‘Duniya’, for the film ‘Lukka Chuppi’ which stars actors Karthik Aryan and Kriti Sanon. His songs ‘Zindag’, ‘Rukh’, ‘Rang Gora’, among others were loved by fans. He was born in an Arora family in Jalandhar, Punjab.

Sugandha Mishra

Sugandha Santosh Mishra is an Indian playback singer, television presenter, and comedian. She is known for her charater in the ‘Kapil Sharma Show’.

She began her career as a radio jockey and worked with Big FM India. She made her appearance in the famous TV reality show ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Singing Superstar’ as a participant and became third-runner up in the show and even made to the finalists of comedy show ‘The Great Indian Laughter Challenge’.

As far as her acting career goes, she made her acting debut on the big screen with the 2014 movie ‘Heropanti’ in a supporting role.

Her 2018 songs ‘Chori Chori’, ‘Kinna Sohna’, ‘Challa’ and ‘Akhiyan’ reached the top of music charts. She hails from the city of Jalandhar.

Jass Manak

Popular Punjabi singer-songwriter Jass Manak, who is predominantly known for his songs "Prada", "Suit Punjabi", "Lehanga", "Viah" and "Boss".

He is originally from Bhakhriana, Jalandhar. His songs are mostly from the genres of Punjabi pop and romance. His single ‘Lehenga’ even featured on the UK Asian Music Chart and the Global Youtube weekly chart.

Manak began his singing career with his debut song "U-Turn" in 2017 which was followed by his 2018 song "Without You”. But he rose to prominence only after his song "Prada" which is one of the most-streamed hit songs in India.

But did you know that he has also written songs for other singers? He wrote songs for singers Karan Randhawa and Nishawn Bhullar. In 2019, Manak wrote the song "Surma Kala" for Jassi Gill and also wrote “Naam Jatt Da" for Gippy Grewal.

Garry Sandhu

Gurmukh Singh Sandhu, known by his artist name, i.e. Garry Sandhu is an Indian singer, songwriter and actor known for his work in the Punjabi Industry.

He made his singing debut in 2010 with the song "Main Ni Peenda" and his acting debut with the film “Romeo Ranjha” in 2014. He has released many famous songs including ‘Illegal Weapon’, ‘Yeah Baby’, ‘Banda Ban Ja’, ‘Excuses’ among others. He also owns his record label ‘Fresh Media Records’.

In 2019, his song "Yeah Baby" was released in the Ajay Devgan starrer Bollywood film ‘De De Pyaar De’ as "Hauli Hauli". He has been nominated for many awards at PTC Punjabi Music Awards. Sandhu hails from Rurka Kalan, a village in Jalandhar.

 

It is important to point out that there are obviously more past and upcoming artists in the media world who have not been included in this list and this list will keep on changing with fresher talent being introduced to the world.
