Since the trailer for the upcoming movie of Harjit Singh’s ‘Ucha Pind’ was released, the Punjabi audience is eagerly waiting for 3rd September 2021 which is the day the movie will hit the cinemas.
But do you know that there was another Punjabi film before 2000 with the same name?
Released more than 25 years ago, the old ‘Ucha Pind’ had famous actors like Sukhjinder Shera, Raj Babbar, Ravinder Maan, Seema Kaushal (not to be mistaken with the current actress who shares the same name), Sangeeta Mehta, Gurdev Dhillon and Gurkirtan as their star cast. In a past interview with the GhaintPunjab team, late actor-director Sukhjinder Shera shared an exclusive detail about the film.
He said, “Ucha Pind was supposed to be made with Veerendra and me in 1984, but due to the attack on Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple), the project was put on the back burner. Later on, we did the movies ‘Yaari Jatt Di’ and ‘Jatt Te Zameen’”.
Adding to this, Sukhjinder said that the film, ‘Ucha Pind’ was all set to start again, but due to the untimely death of veteran actor Veerendra, it was shelved again. It was only years later that Sukhjinder Shera and Raj Babbar started the project again. Also Read: Bhogwan Singh: The First ‘Turban Wrapper’ In Hollywood!
Many film sites including IMDB mention actress Priti Sapru’s name in the top cast. However, even though she was supposed to be part of the film in the original production in 1984, she was not part of the final product. Instead, actress Ravinder Mann played the female lead when the film was finally released.
In an interview with the GhaintPunjab team, actress Ravinder Mann recalled memories of working with the cast of the film. She said, “It was an amazing experience to work with actors like Raj Babbar. I was paired opposite Sukhjinder Shera and Raj Babbar would tease Sukhjinder Shera by saying that he had paired himself opposite a better actress while he (Raj Babbar), had a novice and raw girl (the one Film Wonder Seema Kaushal) opposite him.” Also Read: Rabb Di Mehar: Kapil Batra Announces His Next Directorial
The film was supposed to be shot and released in 1984 but it finally got its chance in 1994, which is almost a decade later and the third time they re-started the production. At the box office, the film’s performance was average at best.
