In a historic decision taken today, the highest sporting honor of India, The Rajiv Gandhu Khel Ratna Award has been renamed to Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. The official announcement has been made by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The award has been renamed after the name of legendary hockey player, Dhyan Chand. The PM said the decision has been taken after he got a lot of requests from citizens across India to name the Khel Ratna Award after Major Dhyan Chand.
The change becomes even more captivating in the times when Tokyo Olympics, the biggest sport even is going on and exceptional performance delivered by our Indian team. Let us tell you, the award was launched in the year 1991-92 which comprises a medallion, a certificate, and a cash prize of ₹ 25 lakh. The first recipient of the Khel Ratna was chess legend Viswanathan Anand. Some of the winners in recent years include cricketer Rohit Sharma, wrestler Vinesh Phogat, and women’s hockey team captain Rani Rampal, among others.
