Punjab Police has recently been sharing songs by Punjabi artists which are about a fellow named Gurbaksh. The songs, titled Gwacha Gurbaksh, have versions sung by Diljit Dosanjh and Sidhu Moosewala both but surprisingly it is the latter's version that has attracted criticism from the villagers and sarpanch of Pathwala village in Banga.
Wanna know why...keep reading.
Sidhu Moosewala's version allegedly targets the deceased 70-year-old Covid victim and portrays him in a bad light. The lyrics of the song ‘Mein Gurbaksh gwacha Italy ton aaya haan’ though doesn't reveal the real name of the man but does have his original picture shown repeatedly in the video. Like many others, even the singer has blamed the deceased for bringing Coronavirus to Punjab and infecting many within his family and the village.
This hasn't gone down well the villagers and sarpanch of Pathwala as the sarpanch Harpal Singh is himself taking care of his Covid-infected mother. He was quoted saying that people have started mocking us and the deceased elderly was actually unaware of his condition else who wants his 2-year-old grandson and 15 family members to fall ill?
He further added that the family has been going through a lot of grinds already and felt that this song is completely ill-conceived, ill-timed and in complete bad taste.
For those who don't know, this is the song based on Punjab’s first Covid-19 patient Baldev Singh, who died of the coronavirus on 18 March.
