In the 90-year long history of Punjabi cinema, the industry has given some finest jewels to world cinema. Though every year plenty of movies are released in the Punjabi movie industry, there are some that leave a mark on the audience's hearts.

Here are seven such movies that have made their mark into the hearts of audiences globally, thus getting the highest ratings on IMDB. Interestingly, three movies are tied for the fourth spot! Read on….

1. Nanak Dukhiya Sab Sansar

The 1970 movie which had legendary actors like Dara Singh, Balraj Sahani and Prithviraj Kapoor was based on the religious riots of the post-partition era. ‘Nanak Dukhiya Sab Sansar’ was written and directed by Dara Singh himself. Even after almost 50 years, this movie is occupying top spot in the IMDB with 8.7/10 rating.

2. Angrej

The 2015 blockbuster is right now occupying the second spot just behind Nanak Dukhiya Sab Sansar, with an overall IMDB rating of 8.6 out of 10. Angrej was graced by the presence of actors like Amrinder Gill, Aditi Sharma and the lady luck of the Punjabi Industry Sargun Mehta. The movie was received overwhelmingly both commercially and critically. In fact, this movie is still among the top 5 highest grossing Punjabi movies of all the time.

3. Punjab 1984

Regarded as one of the finest movies of the Punjabi Cine Industry, this Diljit Dosanjh, Kirron Kher, and Pavan Malhotra starrer is on the 3rd spot amongst highest rated movies on the IMDB with 8. 5/10. Based on the post-operation blue star era, the movie revolves around the tale of a mother who goes out in the search of her lost son. It was written and directed by Anurag Singh.

4. Ardaas

A classic of the year 2016, Ardaas was made under the banner of Gippy Grewal’s production house. The movie also marked the directorial debut of Gippy Grewal along with Rana Ranbir in the role of screenplay writer. ‘Ardaas’ was based on the day to day issues of rural Punjab. Currently, the movie has been rated 8.3/10 by the viewers on IMDB.

5.Carry On Jatta

Along with ‘Ardaas,’ Carry on Jatta too is on the fourth spot of the highest rated Punjabi movies on IMDB. The Gippy Grewal and Mahie Gill starrer has also received 8.3 ratings out of 10. Not just critically, ‘Carry On Jatta’ was also successful commercially as it grossed more than 20 crores as its lifetime collection.

6.Chaar Saahibzaade

This 3D animation movie was based on the historic sacrifice of Shri Guru Gobind Singh’s sons. Made under the banner of Harry Baweja, ‘Chaar Saahibzaade’ has been rated 8.3/10 on IMDB by the viewers. Along with being a critical success, the movie was also a commercial success as it garnered more than 46 crores in the Indian market itself and is currently the 2nd highest grossing Punjabi movie of all the time.

7.Qurbani Jatt Di:

With stars like Dharmendra, Gurdas Maan and Raj Babbar in the star cast, ‘Qurbani Jatt Di’ was a super hit movie from the year 1990. The movie is based on the story of a man who accidentally ends up committing murder and the lives of people surrounding him. The movie was written and directed by Priti Sapru, who was also the part of this movie’s star cast. Currently, the movie is on the fifth spot in the list of highest rated Punjabi movies on IMDB with a rating of 8.2/10.
