We all know the story of Simranjeet Singh Rai aka Babbal Rai as to how he rose to prominence in the public eye through a video. The 34-year old used to work as a cab driver in Australia in order to meet his needs. It was then his life took a dramatic turn when his ‘Australian Challa’ video made him a social media star.
The song made him a famous name amongst global Punjabi community and all of a sudden, a cabby’s name was all over the place. But interestingly the video was made by his friends on his birthday just as memorabilia and that song ‘Australian Challa’ became a part of that video by chance.
When his ‘Australian Challa’ became the talk of the town, one day he was suddenly called up by Sippy Grewal, the elder brother of Pollywood superstar Gippy Grewal. Interestingly, Sippy Grewal was the owner of that cab which was driven by Babbal during those days.
Sippy presented a proposal to the young Babbal and asked him to deliver a performance in an upcoming show in Adelaide with stars like Geeta Zaildar, Gippy Grewal, Miss Pooja, and Yudhvir Manak, who were then in Australia for a tour.
Luckily, young Babbal’s performance received a good response from the Adelaide crowd and after this performance, he was taken onboard by the organizers for the pan Australian tour. And Babbal being an energetic young man grabbed this opportunity with both hands and gained a lot of fame through that tour.
After this, he came up with his debut album ‘Sau Putt’ in 2010 which unfortunately couldn’t do well due to lack of promotional buzz but success couldn’t remain beyond his reach for too long and he got his due fame in 2012, just after ’Sau Putt,’ when he bounced back with his hit track ‘Sohni’.
The song then received more than two million views and until now it has been viewed more than 3.5 million times on YouTube and is surging more with each passing day even after 7 years of its release!
