Do You Know About Amitabh Bachchan's Punjab Connection

By: Harleen Kaur | May 8, 2019

Most things about Amitabh Bachchan are known by everyone but this connection of the Senior Bachchan is relatively unknown as compared to his other stories. Though we have often heard about his hometown Allahabad from him various times, very few of you might know that the superstar of the millennium also has deep roots in Punjab. And this connection is due to his mother Teji Kaur Bachchan (Teji Kaur Suri before marriage).

Big B’s mother Teji Kaur belonged to a Punjabi Sikh family of Lyallpur, Punjab. However, this part of the land went past the borders into Pakistan when partition took place. After this, her family migrated to India and they settled here. Before heading to India, Mrs. Bachchan used to teach psychology in Khoob Chand Degree College, Lahore. It was around that time that she met her future husband Shri. Harivansh Rai Bachchan, a renowned poet of his time. After a few years of courtship, they decided to get married and eventually in 1941, they both tied the knot.

After marrying Mr. Bachchan, she moved to Allahabad and took charge of the family as Senior Bachchan used to be engrossed with his poetry. Later on, the couple got blessed with 2 sons – Amitabh and Ajitabh. The elder son Amitabh, of course, needs no introduction as he went on to become a superstar of the millennium.

If you follow Amitabh Bachchan on Twitter, you would have definitely seen many of his tweets in which he shared the fond memories of Lohri with his mother and grandparents. In one tweet, he shared his image in the turban-clad Sikh look along with a sweet message for his late grandparents which read “My Nani, Amar Kaur Sodhi .. and my Nana Khazan Singh Suri .. must be smiling from the heavens to see me thus .. in my Sikh roots !!”

Time and again, he has also shared many fond memories and expressed his fondness for his mother’s homeland Punjab like he usually speaks about his hometown Allahabad. All of this simply shows that ‘Punjabiyat’ is very much within the genes of Big B as much as it is in any other Punjabi!
