Blogs: Punjabi Singers Who Died At A Very Young Age!

There is a very famous dialogue of Late. Rajesh Khanna, from his timeless classic Anand “Babumoshaye, Zindagi Lambi Nahin, Badi Honi Chahiye”.

Similarly, this cine world has witnessed the existence and aura of names who lived a thousand lives in one single life. Their life is a perfect synonym of the abovementioned dialogue.

Here's a list of those Punjabi singers who died at a very young age:

1. Surjit Singh Bindrakhia (15 April 1962- 17 November 2003):

An inspiration for an entire generation of singers, Surjit Bindrakhia in his one-decade long career delivered some evergreen hits which makes all of us feel that he is somewhere around us even today. The singer breathed his last at his residence in Mohali on 17th November 2003. He passed away at the age of just 41 due to a heart attack. In the age of Pop-Jazz, his Tera Yaar Bolda and Jatt Di Pasand are remembered dearly by people.

2. Raj Brar (3 January 1972 – 31 December 2016):

Raj Brar was a native of Moga district who stepped into the music industry in the year 1992. Within a few years, his name was all over the place with hits like Sarkaar, Saheli, and Gunahgaar. He also acted in movies like Police in Pollywood, Jawani Zindabaad and Jatt in Mood. In the midst of all these things, he passed away on 31st December 2016 in Chandigarh at the age of just 44.

3. Amar Singh Chamkila (21 July 1960 - 8 March 1988):

The singer is regarded as one of the best stage performers of Punjab. His best-known songs are Baba Tera Nankana, Jatt Di Dushmani, and Talwar Main Kalgidhar Di. The singer was assassinated by unknown assailants on 8th March 1988 along with his wife, Amarjot and two other band members, at the age of just 28. However, the actual reason for his assassination is still unknown.

4. Soni Pabla (29 June 1976 – 14 October 2006):

The 30-year-old singer collapsed while he was performing during an event in Ontario on 14th October 2006. The paramedics’ team couldn’t revive him thereafter. The singer moved to Canada in the 1990s where he got attracted to music and eventually he made a career for himself. After learning music from Rajinder Singh Raj, he turned pro with his first album ‘Heeray’ in 2002. This was followed by ‘Gal Dil Di’ and ‘Dil Tera’. His friends paid tribute to him through an album called ‘Eternity’ in 2006.

5. Kuly Ral (5 June 1977-22 May 2012)

Kuldeep Ral aka Kuly was one of the three brothers who founded the famous group RDB (Rhythm Dhol Bass). The group has some hit songs like Singh is King and Sheran Di Kaum Punjabi under their name. All was going well till 2011 until Kuly was diagnosed with Brain Tumor. Kuly succumbed to this deadly disease on 22 May 2012 at the age of just 35.

6.Dilshad Akhtar (Died in 1995)

Dilshad Akhtar, brother of the late singer, Manpreet Akhtar, was known for his voice quality. This Akhtar was born in Gilze Wala, Kotkapura town of Indian Punjab. Dilshad was a very active performer and interacted with his audiences a lot. High on intoxication, once a drunk DSP insisted him to sing the song nachi jo saade naal by Hans Raj Hans but Akhtar refused as the song belonged to another singer. Provoked over the refusal, the officer snatched AK-47 from his bodyguard and fired at the singer, killing him on the spot. The DSP later committed suicide.
