They got their dream debut in the Punjabi film industry but later on, vanished with a poof. These actresses came with a bang and went back to their own territories, without getting a chance to look back. The list of these names is long and we fail to understand the reason behind their disappearance. Preet Kamal, Zareen Khan, Gauahar Khan, Sagarika Ghatke, Navpreet Banga, Oshin Sai, Sheetal Thakur, Tannu Kaur and many others made their big debut opposite some of the most popular names from the industry but while the men have had a successful journey ahead, these lead actresses could not make it to the next film.
Sheetal Thakur, who was seen opposite Binnu Dhillon in the blockbuster hit Bambukat said, "Bambukat is one of the most appreciated Punjabi movies that I have known. I am glad that I was a part of it but frankly for me, it happened by chance. I was in Mumbai when someone narrated the script to me. The script was interesting and I said yes but truthfully speaking, after that film I haven't been approached for other films. I am based in Mumbai and I don’t have a network in Punjabi film industry, which could be a reason that I haven't bagged any other project from that industry. Also, I am busy shooting my web series which keeps me pretty occupied."
Preet Kamal debuted opposite Ammy Virk in his thriller suspense titled Saab Bahadur but wasn't seen after that on the Punjabi screens. We asked her why and she replied, "After the movie released I lost my grandmother because of which I shifted back to Delhi. I have been away from the industry since an year so as to give my family more time. The preceding year has been rough for us but now I am back and am also reading a few scripts. I surely am planning to work again."
Prachi Tehlan, who was seen in Arjan and Bailaras opposite Roshan Prince and Binnu Dhillon repectively, has not starred in any Punjabi film this year. This talented actress, in her defence said, "Post Bailaras, I got busy with my TV serial which was aired on Star Plus at a prime time. It consumed a lot of my time. Now, I have signed a big Malayalam movie which is a 50 crore project. I'll be seen opposite Mammootty, who is a big star down south. There are commitments to be met before I sign another Punjabi film but yeah, if there's a big project coming my way from Punjabi industry, then I'll be happy to do it."
Priyanka Mehta, who was seen opposite Harish Verma in Krazzy Tabbar last year has also disappeared from the industry. Though even her debut went very much unnoticed but we thought that she too should get a chance to voice her reasons for not bagging any other Punjabi film and she explained, "I am based in Mumbai and don't really have many connections in Punjab. I hardly know makers there and this is the reason why I haven’t been getting more roles. Being a married woman, I am occupied with my family life too so staying in Punjab and pitching people for work is not possible for me. Therefore, I am away from Punjabi industry but not from working in Mumbai because I am doing advertisements, which keep me on my toes."
Yamini Malhotra made her Punjabi debut oppsite Roshan Prince in Main Teri Tu Mera. Though reports are that she's signed a new Punjabi film but nothing meaty seems to have fallen in her kitty. When asked the reason for not appearing in many films, Yamini quoted, "I have had lack of good offers after my debut movie released and many makers just wanted a pretty face in their film. I have signed a movie titled Dil Hona Chaidaa Jawaan which would be coming out this year but it is currrently being re-shot."
The abovementioned actresses have their own set of opinions and we respect that but one thing that comes to our mind is that are connections that only way of getting good roles in a Punjabi film? Is Punjabi industry only looking for a pretty face in a film and not actually a talented lead actress??
What do you think?
